Of the 10K plus AM/FM radio stations in the US, only 19 are licensed to
African American women. In 2019, Chicago’s 95.1 FM became No. 20 and will celebrate its 1st
anniversary with a virtual performance, on August 29th, 5p-8p, starring Award-winning, Smooth
Jazz Guitarist, Nick Colionne, featuring R&B artist, Terisa Griffin.
Year 1 for the station included the World’s Largest Day Party, a phrase used by Tom Joyner to describe his retirement party hosted by the station, December 2019. During the event, the
infamous “Fly-Jock,” passed the morning show torch to the popular Ramonski Luv, propelling
the launch of Chicago’s only LIVE and LOCAL morning show for mature African American
listeners. In January, to honor listeners, the station staged a takeover of Chicago Transit
Authority’s Red Line with Black McDonald Owner Operators (BMOA). In February, the station gave over 400 new and gently worn coats to residents of the West Side of Chicago. Two (2) days later, from Operation Push, after learning that Beacon Light Ministries and Food Pantry
of the Roseland Community suffered a total loss as a result of a fire, the station led the effort to
fill a 17-feet truck with donated supplies to help offset the devastation.
Further, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the station became the Executive Producer of WE ARE CHICAGO, a we-are-the-world project of Chicago artists. Available for purchase at www.WeAreChgo.com,
100% of the proceeds from the sale of the song will benefit small businesses in Chicago,
negatively impacted by the pandemic. Other wins include The Mayor’s Minute, developed by
and was exclusively on 95.1 FM Chicago, whereby Chicago’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot and her
the executive team participated in a weekly segment which guided listeners through the early days of
COVID-19.
“Our 1st year has been hard-fought, but we survived despite a global pandemic, the disappearance of advertisers, and a flood at the Willis Tower where our signal transmits, which for weeks, knocked many stations without back-ups off the air.
We have since launched our own virtual theater, which streams from our App and operates like Pay-Per-View, where there are
over 100K listeners,” says CEO Tracey V. Bell. “In fact, the Omni-Channel Theater is set to play
host to Smooth Jazz Guitarist Nick Colionne, feat R&B powerhouse, Terisa Griffin, August 29th
for our 1-year anniversary celebration.
Reimagining radio beyond the dial, we will combine our ability to attract an international audience with our ability to entertain. To do so, 95.1 FM Chicago becomes more than a radio station. We transform into The FM Omni-Channel.”
